About the Board of Trustees
Pleasant Valley School district has a five-member Board of Trustees, elected at large to staggered, four-year terms.
The school board serves as the district’s legislative body, determining general policies for the care, management, and control of PVSD’s public schools. The board is charged with providing the best educational program in our community for grades kindergarten through eighth in accordance with the California Constitution, the laws of the state, adopted board policy, and the desires of the community.
Although the trustees are elected locally, they are state officers responsible for the governance of a political subdivision of the state. The school district is independent of city and county governments, but cooperates closely with them.
In addition to establishing school district policy, the board adopts an annual budget and approves all expenditures; employs personnel; approves curriculum, textbooks, and courses of study; and makes decisions on school sites, boundaries, building plans, and construction contracts.
PVSD trustees have no power to act individually in the name of the board. Action can be taken only when the board is in formal session with a majority of its members present. Actions of the board are governed by the Brown Act.
