CHAMPS: A Proactive and Positive Approach to Classroom Management
The Pleasant Valley School District has instituted the Safe and Civil Schools: CHAMPS approach at each campus. The strategies addressed in CHAMPS focus on our continued effort to Response to Intervention (RtI) and providing meaningful professional development for our faculty.
Each school site has participated in trainings that focus on developing a proactive and positive approach to classroom management. The strategies employed are on structuring classrooms for success, teaching behavioral expectations, observing and monitoring trends, interacting positively with students, and correcting behavior fluently. The following items have been implemented to address the social, emotional, and behavioral needs of our students:
Guidelines for Success reflects a school wide vision that addresses noble ideas and character traits that will inspire the individual student to achieve long-range goals.
CHAMPS Acronym is a teaching tool to provide clear expectations to students regarding classroom Conversations, requesting Help, understanding Activities, recognizing appropriateness of Movement, expected Participation and how a clear understanding of all areas will lead to Success.
Classroom Management and Discipline Plan is a plan to document vision, organization, and procedures for the classroom.
Ratio of Positive Interactions is an understanding that we need to interact with students at least three times more often when they are behaving responsibly than when they are misbehaving.
Increasing Motivation is an implemented system directed at using motivation to increase responsible behavior and achievement of goals.
