Principal's Message Welcome to the 2011-12 school year at El Descanso Elementary School! We have a another incredible year planned for our students and school community. I think it will be even better than last year- which is hard to beat!Our focus areas this year continue to be about raising the academic expectations of our students even higher, being mindful of our health and wellness, and building a joyous environment in which students and staff thrive. We have tremendously bright students and we know we can raise our expectations of them even higher. You will see more challenging classroom activities and homework this year that ask students to think creatively and use logic to figure things out.
In order to achieve our heightened expectations our students will need to be healthy and physically fit. As a parent myself, I know how hard it can be to get kids moving when the video game generation is pulling them to sit and stare! For that reason, we make an extra effort to keep our students moving and focused on healthy food choices. I ask for your support in this area by limiting foods at school that are high in fats and sugars, especially sodas, candy and cookies. I am so impressed at the food I am seeing during snack and lunchtime and students know when they are eating something that is good for their body. Above all, we are all dedicated to making El Descanso a place where all students feel safe and welcomed everyday. As our school president said this year in his campaign speech, we "want El Descanso students to brag about their school to others".
