Giving

"Think of giving not as a duty,

but as a privilege."

--John D Rockefeller

Each school year presents us

opportunities to share

with our community

and show our children the joy giving.

"Stuff a Bus"  and other Food Drives to Benefit Food Share

We host 2-3 Food Drives per year, usually in the early winter and early spring.

FOOD Share is a food bank that houses and distributes millions of pounds of food per year to the hungry of Ventura County. We operate a physical plant of roughly 36, 000 square feet of warehouse space in addition to the support staff offices and administration.  The food bank employs a core staff in key positions to receive, inventory, store and distribute food to disseminate via a partner and agency distribution method.

usually around Valentine's Day.

When children are removed from their homes due to a domestic crisis, they leave with the clothes on their backs and little, if anything else.  Ventura County Child Protective Services depends on donations like this to fill their clothing banks, so they can provide the basics for these children.

Jump Rope For Heart to Benefit The American Heart Association
Also, typically held in February, students participate in a Jump Roping Assembly and collect pledges for the Heart Association.

The American Heart Association is a national voluntary health agency whose mission is: "Building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke."

School Tool Box to Benefit the Tutoring Centers at Project Understanding
School Tool Boxes go on sale in the Spring.  Along with buying school supplies for their own children, parents may purchase a supply box for Project Understanding.

The Project Understanding Tutoring Program is a free service to help low-income students succeed in school while developing self-confidence, motivation and learning skills. Started in 1982 by Lynn Nelson, tutoring was first held in a small room in the Project Understanding building on Vince Street. Over the years the program has grown, and we now have four tutoring centers in Ventura and one in Oxnard.  Our Students are referred to us by their teachers because they are struggling with some area of their school work, and they come from families who are not able to provide the help that their children need. We now have 260 students.
