Language Arts
The week of May 28, we will begin our next novel study, Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo. Ten-year-old Opal is lonely in her new town until she brings home a stray dog, Winn-Dixie, from the supermarket. With her new companion by her side, she makes new and sometimes unlikely friends. Through these friendships, Opal is able to forge a new bond with the single dad that raises her and come to terms with the absence of her mother, all because of Winn-Dixie. We will not test this novel until we finish reading it.
In writing, the students are finishing up their California state reports. Then, we will focus on summarizing articles of information for the remainder of the year.
Math
We are wrapping up Chapter 24 on probability this week and will give the Chapter 24 quiz on Wednesday, May 29. We will then review Unit 8 (chapters 23-24) and give the Unit 8 test on Friday, May 31.
Science
We are reviewing Chapter 6: Electricity in class on Monday, and then giving the Chapter 6 test on Tuesday, May 21. Students have foldables and vocabulary cards to help them review for their test at home. In class we have been doing several review activities.
We will then begin Chapter 7: Magnetism. Students will learn about magnetism, electromagnets, and how motors and generators work. We will test this chapter towards the end of the first week in June.
History
We are wrapping up our California state reports and sharing our projects in class.
Open House
Open House is on Wednesday, May 29. The evening begins with our Art Show in the multipurpose room from 5-8pm. Then there is an outdoors family dinner from 5-6:30 pm. Starting at 5:20, grade levels and our school chorus will perform in the quad. Classrooms will be open from 6:30 to 7:30 for families to see what their children have been doing. We encourage families to attend as it gives the children a chance to show off their classrooms and hard work over the year.
