School Climate Survey The School Climate Survey is now available on the Tierra Linda website until May 10th. Please take some time to fill out the survey on the various apects of our school culture. Thanks so much!
Coral Reef Model In science we studied earth’s ecosystems. One of the ecosystems we focused on was the coral reef. Students will be creating models in class to review. Students may bring in items to make these models. Some items students have brought in have been aquarium rocks, tin foil, different colored sponges, and anything else you can creatively think that could be used in a reef model. If your child would like to share materials with classmates, please keep in mind that there needs to be enough for all of the class, to be fair. Students may start bringing in items with their names labeled on their materials.
STAR Testing This week students will be administered the STAR test. I am sure I don’t need to remind you how important it is for your child to get a good night’s rest, a healthy breakfast, and to arrive to school on time. They have worked so hard this school year and this will be the time when they get to shine and show all they have learned. It should be stressed that this is something they need to take seriously, but at the same time this should not cause them large amounts of anxiety.
Wellness Family Expo on May 11th We have had several families in our class sign up for the Expo events already! We are working towards having 10% of Tierra Linda represented. If you haven’t signed up already, check out the flyer that went home at the beginning of the week. Sounds like the Chicken Chase will be quite a fun event!
Open House Open House will be held on May 22nd from 6:30-8:00. Because of open house there will be an early dismissal at 1:50.
Fourth Grade Play Our fourth grade play will be taking place on May 15th, from 9:20-10:20, with a cast party(10:00-10:20) to follow. All the students have been assigned their roles and should be busy practicing their lines and songs. The students have been sounding great so far, so I am excited to see them perform for you all! Here is a link to sign up to bring items for the cast party, which will be held in our classroom, To view your sign up page, go to:

Rotary Track Team Information has been presented to students by our PE teacher, Coach Carter, about the Rotary Track Meet coming up. If your child is interested in trying out, Coach Carter has already discussed with them some of the information. The tryouts will be May 9th, and more information will be coming home to those who are interested. Practices will be held on Thursdays, and the meet is on June 1st (Saturday).
Curriculum
The students will be completing Island of the Blue Dolphins, and will begin working on their in-class book reports for this novel. While working on our book reports we will not be having weekly reading tests for this novel.
We will be wrapping up the expository summary genre this month. The students have had practice with this genre the last couple of months, and they have just completed their assessment with this particular genre.
The class will be completing the last chapter of our math book, chapter 17 on fractions (which covers some fifth grade concepts) and finishing chapter 23 which focuses on geometry and measurement as well. For the remainder of the year we will be reviewing the more difficult fourth grade concepts as well as touch upon some material they will be seeing in fifth grade.
We will be finishing up the Earth Science Unit with chapter 5 on volcanoes and earthquakes. We will be moving on to Physical Science with magnetism and electricity.
