Health Insurance Resources
Covered California is the place where Californians can get brand-name health insurance under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. It’s the only place to get federal premium assistance to help you buy private insurance from companies like the ones listed on the right. That means you may qualify for a discount on private insurance, or get health insurance through the state’s Medi-Cal program. Either way, you’ll get great health coverage.
Medi-Cal is California’s public health insurance program and provides needed health care services for low-income individuals, including families with children, seniors, persons with disabilities, children in foster care, pregnant women, and low-income people with specific diseases such as tuberculosis, breast cancer, or HIV/AIDS. Recipients of CalWORKs and Foster Care are automatically eligible for Medi-Cal.
As a result of the Affordable Care Act, eligibility requirements for Medi-Cal have expanded to include all adults whose annual income is under 138% of the federal poverty level—$16,243 for an individual and $33,465 for a family of four—who are citizens or legal residents. Medi-Cal coverage is free for those who qualify.
SB 75 - Full-Scope Medi-Cal for All Children
Under the new law, SB 75 Full Scope Medi-Cal for All Children, that will be implemented in May 1, 2016, children under 19 years of age are eligible for full-scope Medi-Cal benefits regardless of immigration status, as long as they meet all other eligibility requirements (Welfare and Institutions Code section 14007.8.) Ventura County Human Services Agency, Covered California, and other interested parties are working to identify and provide children with full Medi-Cal coverage benefits. See the flyer for 5 Things You Need to Know (5 Puntos Que Necesita Saber Sobre) to enroll your child in full-scope Medi-Cal.
